ENG vs SL 1st T20I 2026: England Thrilling Won by 119 Runs
England had a magnificent start to their three match T20I series against Sri Lanka. The home side registered a massive 119 run win in the first match at Utilita Bowl in Southampton on 15th September 2026. An outstanding unbeaten century from England captain Harry Brook laid the platform for the home side who bowled Sri Lanka out for a mere 135 as the home side posted 254/4 in their 20 overs after being asked to bat first.
Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and decided to field with a hope that his seamers can make early breakthroughs and peg England back at their own fortress. However, England’s batting attack came out with fire and enthusiasm and soon put together the highest score in T20I’s against Sri Lanka. The home side ended the powerplay on 90/1, a superb platform for a big score, and the fireworks started soon.
On his T20I debut Aneurin Donald opened along with Jos Buttler and the debutant played with such positive intent that he was run out for 12 however his departure did not slow England down. Buttler carried on with his attacking approach and Brook came out to the crease and anchored his side.
Buttler and Brook launched a successful run chase and put together one of the best second wicket stands in the space of 60 balls to register 128 runs. Buttler played his natural game of hitting sixes and fours and kept the Sri Lankan bowlers guessing on where the next hit was going to come from. He eventually fell after making an excellent 80 from 44 balls with seven fours and three sixes.
Meanwhile Brook continued to launch strike at every opportunity and played with such confidence and aggression that he reached his century in only 42 balls, the England captain becoming the talk of the stadium at the Utilita Bowl. Brook eventually finished unbeaten on 114 from 49 deliveries with ten fours and six sixes. His strike rate of more than 230 made it very difficult for Sri Lanka to keep up with the scoring pace during the final overs.
Brook’s innings was all the more special as it was his second T20I century and his first hundred in 18 international innings across the formats. He played with an incredible positive intent and his strike rate was exceptional throughout. Will Jacks added 21 runs in his 12 balls as England registered 254/4 from their allocated 20 overs.
The chasing side knew right from the word go that they were in for a nightmare and the home side’s bowlers made life even more difficult for the visiting batters. The Sri Lankan batters failed to click with regularity and found themselves in all sorts of trouble. Pathum Nissanka made 12 before Kamil Mishara and Lahiru Udara failed to provide the opening partnership as needed by their side.
Their skipper Charith Asalanka also failed to get off the mark and made only 10, but Dasun Shanaka provided some respite for the visitors with his attacking 24 from 14 balls before he also fell soon. Kamindu Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga also failed to get going as the Sri Lankan run chase continued to unravel. Dunith Wellalage made the highest score for Sri Lanka with a quick 33 from 21 balls which included four fours and two sixes, however there was not enough support to really get the run rate up.
Sri Lanka eventually collapsed for 135 in 19 overs and were completely and utterly comprehensively beaten by a mammoth 119 run margin, a score that they would have found very difficult to chase down considering the way in which England scored their runs.
Sonny Baker was the leading wicket taker for England with his spell of 2/12 from his four overs. The young fast bowler played his home ground to the full and picked up a very crucial breakthrough that put Sri Lanka on the back foot. Jamie Overton picked up 2 wickets for 20 runs while Liam Dawson accounted for two wickets for 23 runs.
England’s bowlers made Sri Lanka struggle for partnerships and wickets fell through the innings. They could not get any sort of partnership going and the Sri Lankan batters were looking for regular boundaries before falling by the wayside.
England’s batters made hay while the sun was shining with their strike rate and the overall pace of the innings. They batted with great efficiency and they kept hitting big sixes and fours with the help of their very aggressive running between the wickets. In contrast to the Sri Lankan batters who struggled to make any sort of partnerships and kept losing their wickets before they could get going.
Harry Brook was adjudged as the player of the match after his unbeaten century of 114. His knock was indeed a special one as it was also his second T20I century but he made significant contributions with the bat as well as with the ball as he made a 79 and a 95 in consecutive games in the earlier part of the year. England captain registered his maiden century in T20I’s on his home ground and was adjudged as the player of the match.
The win meant that England led 1-0 in the three match T20I series and it was also their 13th consecutive T20I victory against the visitors, as stated in Reuters’ match report. The win put Sri Lanka under pressure as they struggled to make any sort of T20I progress while the home side, England, could believe that they have made a complete performance with more than just a single bowler taking wickets.
The win in the first match of the series was the ideal start for the home side as it would lay the platform for a series victory.
Sri Lanka’s troubles in the first match of the three match T20I series are an indication of what they need to work on. Their bowlers struggled to contain any sort of scoring during the middle and death overs, with the batters failing to score boundaries at regular intervals. Their batting side could not build partnerships at the start of their innings and as a result they could not get up to speed.
England’s white ball stars will look to continue with their sensational form in the second match of the series while Sri Lanka will look to bounce back in their next game on 17th September in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. The third T20I match is scheduled to take place in Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester on 19th September. This three match T20I series is also a part of Sri Lanka’s white ball tour in England and they also have three ODIs lined up later this month.
