Pakistan may have suffered another result against England but one name emerged from the final Test at Edgbaston with plenty of attention around him. Young fast bowler Razaullah produced a performance on his Test debut showing both his bowling ability and fearless batting as Pakistan fought hard to stay alive in the series.
The 21-year-old arrived on the stage with very little Test experience behind him but he wasted no time making an impression. His first major moment came with the ball when he dismissed England batting star Joe Root on debut. For a Pakistan player entering Test cricket for the first time removing one of Englands most experienced batters was a huge statement.
However Razaullahs biggest contribution came later in Pakistans innings. With the visitors under pressure and England expecting to finish the innings quickly the debutant walked in at number nine and completely changed the momentum of the game.
Of trying simply to survive against Englands bowlers Razaullah attacked them with remarkable confidence. He played a brand of cricket and began finding the boundary regularly putting Englands bowlers under unexpected pressure.
His innings eventually produced a 81 runs from only 63 deliveries. The knock included nine sixes. Became one of the most memorable lower-order innings of the Test. His fearless approach gave Pakistan the runs and momentum they desperately needed.
Razaullah also reached his century in only 43 balls setting a new record for the fastest fifty by a Pakistani batter on Test debut. The achievement made his performance more remarkable because he was batting at number nine and facing an England attack that had dominated Pakistan throughout much of the series.
At one stage Pakistan were in danger of being dismissed without giving England another meaningful challenge. Shan Masood had made 95 Azan Awais contributed 59. Babar Azam scored 76 but wickets continued to fall. Once the recognised batters were back in the pavilion England appeared close to wrapping up the innings.
That was when Razaullah stepped forward.
He joined Mohammad Abbas and the pair produced a partnership that completely frustrated England. Their ninth-wicket stand was worth 121 runs allowing Pakistan to move from a position to a total that gave them at least a chance of making England work for the victory.
Razaullahs attacking batting was particularly impressive because there was no sign that he was overwhelmed by the occasion. He took the attack to England. Repeatedly cleared the boundary with his nine sixes becoming one of the defining images of the Test.
His performance also highlighted the speed of his rise to international cricket. Razaullah was a surprise inclusion in Pakistans squad after major changes were made following the teams defeats in the series. Reports noted that he had a short domestic career before receiving his opportunity at international level.
His journey to the England tour was also far from ordinary. Reports around his selection highlighted difficulties contacting him and issues surrounding his passport before he eventually travelled to England. What followed was a transformation from an unexpected squad call-up to a player making headlines on the biggest stage of his career.
On the field at Edgbaston however Razaullah looked ready for the challenge. His wicket of Joe Root demonstrated his ability with the ball while his explosive 81 showed that he could also provide runs from the lower order.
Pakistan eventually finished their innings on 449 setting England a target of 130 runs. That was a recovery considering the position the visitors had been in earlier in the innings. Razaullah and Abbas had prevented England from ending the match earlier than expected.
England were briefly given a scare during the chase when Mohammad Abbas dismissed Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay in the opening over. Suddenly the small target looked less straightforward than expected.
Joe Root and Jordan Cox then steadied Englands innings. Root eventually finished unbeaten on 62 while Cox remained not out on 59 as England completed an eight-wicket victory. The result gave England a 3–0 series sweep over Pakistan.
For Pakistan the series result was undoubtedly disappointing. The visitors lost all three Tests and the margin of defeat in the opening two matches had already put them under pressure.. Razaullahs emergence at Edgbaston provided a rare positive moment during a difficult tour.
His debut was especially impressive because he contributed in both disciplines. Taking Joe Roots wicket showed his potential as a bowler while scoring 81 runs with nine sixes demonstrated an aggressive batting ability that could become valuable for Pakistans Test side.
There is still a road ahead for the young cricketer. One outstanding Test does not guarantee a place in international cricket and Razaullah will now face the challenge of performing consistently at the highest level.. His Edgbaston performance has certainly given Pakistan supporters a reason to follow his progress closely.

The England series finished with a 3–0 loss for Pakistan. The last Test might also be remembered as the game where Razaullah made his mark in international cricket. From a surprise selection to a first Test his journey at Edgbaston has already become one of the most interesting stories, in Pakistan cricket.
